Osman Gazi, the founder of the Ottoman Empire, lived between 1258-1324. Osmangazi was buried in the mausoleum built on the chapel of the Byzantine Monastery named Sainte Elie, known as the "Gümüşlü Kümbet", after the conquest of Bursa upon his will, during the siege of Bursa. The tomb, which was completely destroyed by a fire in 1801 and by the earthquake of 1855, was restored to its present form in 1863 by Sultan Abdulaziz, remaining faithful to its old structure.
